Meeting Notes, August 17, 2016
Recorded by Bonnie Kern
Edited by Tom McClellan
Meeting called to order by President Jim Hairston. Randy Black provided the invocation. Karen George led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
There were no visiting Rotarians (which mean that 1.4 million other Rotarian missed out on a great chance for a make-up with a fun club).
Special guests: Heidi Wachter introduced Carolyn Cyr and Officer Ralph Rocco, our guest speakers. Rick Ring introduced the school district’s risk manager and Jenny Goodin introduced her son, Aaron Weeks, just born a month ago.
Sunshine Report: Karen George reported all is well. Continue to keep Charlie and Kathie Maxwell in your thoughts and prayers.
Upcoming events and/or commitments for our club:
Joyce Loveday reminded us about the Rick King event at the McGavick Center on Saturday, September 10 at 11:30 – lunch and speaker. Tickets are available on line on the Clover Park Rotary Website or at the weekly meeting. There will be no noon meeting that week.
Karen Fengler Nichols reminded everyone that dues are due. Please pay them by the end of August, if you haven’t already done so.
President Jim read a thank you from the new downtown Victoria club for our $100.00 donation to help with their club start-up expenses.
President Jim reminded us that Thursday, September 29 is the next Theater benefit. Tickets will be available soon. Mark your calendar and invite your friends.
Joyce Loveday shared her experience of having Flat Paul accompany her to the following: A meeting in her office with students of the Environmental Science program and in the instructor Kathy Smith. Springbrook Block Party and Community Fair that included students from 7 programs of the college. Courage Classic and our rest stop at Nason Creek. Caring for Kids “Ready to Learn Fair”.
Bob Lawrence will report next week on his Flat Paul experience, and John Munn took Flat Paul home for the coming week.
Fun and Fines with General Ed, assisted by Anne Winters
Joyce Loveday was fined $2.00 for an incorrect date on one of her slides (ratted out by Teresa Nye).
Heidi Wachter contributed $200 to cover last week’s (eponymous) Wachter, tithing to our club for the funds she collected for riding in the Courage Classic, and for her 14th anniversary – all good.
Teresa Nye paid $10.00 to bring a merciful end the discussion of Heidi’s high heels that had been mentioned in the prior week’s notes.
Karen Fengler Nichols and her husband Joe entered a competition in Victoria, BC with their dragon boat and won a gold medal. She contributed $20.00 to the club.
John Munn contributed $10.00 for sharing information about his kids and his promotion of the upcoming Lakewood Playhouse fundraiser for children’s theater - anything purchased on line or in store from Barnes and Noble on Saturday, August 20 will result in a contribution to the theater. Please be sure you specify the Lakewood Playhouse as the beneficiary of your donation.
Today’s speakers: Officer Ralph Rocco and Carolyn Cyr discussed the Lakewood Police Department’s and Greater Lakes’ coordinated program to work together and interact more effectively with people who have mental health issues. After a brief video that described the program, Ralph and Carolyn answered questions from the audience. The problem of homelessness and how it impacts individuals and the community is a major contributor to the difficulties of the mentally ill.
Drawing: Paul Webb had the winning ticket and won $5.00 (no Ace).
